Prairie Creek Park in Maquoketa
Prairie Creek Recreation Area
Prairie Creek Recreation Area on Maquoketa’s southeast side is a gem. It contains a 2-acre fishing pond, 18-hole disc golf course, modern restrooms, and a reservable pavilion complete with picnic tables and a fireplace. An ADA trail is being constructed to enhance the five miles of hiking trails throughout the meandering creek valley, dense woods, and tallgrass prairie. The parking lot has been recently upgraded The area, 273 acres large, was donated to the city in 2014 by Robert J. Martin. Access from the west is at 1215 Summit Street. Two access points are on the east side. The first is ½ -mile south of Highway 64 at 2126 223rd Avenue, and another is at 3324 223rd Avenue.
The mowed hiking trails wander along the creek, pass some beautiful limestone bluffs, and move up to ridgetop prairies. In addition, the park surprises visitors with archeological and ecological treasures.
